I see that at this point in time that a lot of businesses focus on the customer and forget about their employees.&lt;br/&gt;I think that this should have a lot to say to those who focus too much on rules and policies and leave their employee way behind. After all, employees are potential customers and fellow human beings.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Understand the fact your employee is a human being. You have needs and they do too. An employee should be able to feel like their boss is a fellow human being and not want to run away in fear. Evaluate yourself&amp;#8212;do the employees want to work for you or do they just want to get their job done just to get away from you? Employees work best with someone who can be reasonable and fair rather than someone who just barks out orders and expects them done. This makes everyone happier and provides a less stressful environment.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Reward employees for a job well done. Sometimes you must set up another employee as an example for others to follow. This is not favoritism, this is recognizing a hard working employee for his/her accomplishments and making others want to follow the example. It should make other employees want to compete to be the next one rewarded, provided they have the proper work ethic.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Good examples of rewards for employees: Certificate of Recognition, a raise, an extra break on a given day, coupon for a free drink or food from the cafeteria, a certain day off, etc. There are many ways you can do this and some are pretty cost effective if you are creative enough.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;This can also apply to certain groups or team rewards as well.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;3&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If an employee does something wrong, do not think you have to punish him/her for the mistake all the time.&lt;br/&gt;Yes, you have read right, do not punish the employee all of the time. I have run into many bosses who take the company&amp;#8217;s policies and rules way too seriously. These are the type that decide because an employee did something they do not like, they will bring him/her into his/her office and rip them up and down for it and will not even hear what the employee has to say. This is highly immature behavior and does not fit with a boss that regards his/her employees as human beings.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;It is helpful to consider all the factors an employee is dealing with when considering the wrongful behavior. For example, did a customer say this person was rude? How rude was the employee? Could the customer have possibly been having a bad day and wanted to take it out on someone or just misread what the employee said or did? In any case, if it is not a behavior that repeats itself day after day and is not as serious as belting out a string of curse words at the customer, it is likely the employee just needs reminding to be on their best behavior.&lt;br/&gt;The very first thing to do to an employee is not to write him/her up for something minor but to understand that people occasionally make mistakes.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;4&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A person might benefit from a psychology course to understand certain behaviors and deal with them effectively. Effective employee treatment does not come from yelling in anger at an employee until he/she gets the job done. If one finds his/herself doing that often such a person might benefit from anger or stress management.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;5&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Listen to your employees. If one of them suggests something to improve the company and it can be done, do it.&lt;br/&gt;Also, remember to get both sides of the story when one employee complains about another. Be fair and balanced and do not judge one person to be wrong until all the details have been heard.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;6&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Do whatever you can to keep good employees.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For example: if a person starts favoring people who have better personalities because the person likes their personality, stop right there. A person needs to be uplifting those who do good work to set a good example. A lot of misery, grief, and lost production time can be avoided if good examples are provided to motivate workers.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;7&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Think whatever else you would do to motivate your employee properly and apply it.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;8&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If a person has to work along side employees, do it! They will see not the boss as the mysterious stranger that does not care about their work, but a fellow human being who wants to do anything to help them get the job done.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;li class="step"&gt;&lt;span class="stepNumber"&gt;9&lt;/span&gt;
&lt;p&gt;If nothing else, remember these steps and keep a copy somewhere it will be read everyday. This way, a reminder will always be around to treat employees with dignity.&lt;/p&gt;
